Last day in Crete! In hindsight, wish we had gone to more beaches on the western side of Crete near Chania but just didn't have the time. Wish we had skipped seeing Rethymo! It was nice but I prefer just being on a pretty beach instead.
Today we packed up and left Chania around noon to go spend one night in Heraklion so we can catch the 9 am ferry from the port to Santorini. There are no ferries from Chania to Santorini, and upon my research for Heraklion, this city didn't seem too appealing to spend more than one day in. And I was right!
its not as charming and has more of a 'city' feel to it. Being from NYC (which is the greatest!) it's hard for me to like any other cities as much. Heraklion just seems a bit more run down to me.
Took us two hours to drive here and we are staying at Kronos Hotel. It's a bit dingy but you get what you pay for and we are paying $65 euros for just one night. After we settled in, we jetted off the the Heraklion Archaeological Museum, which costs 10 euros pp. It was interesting to see artifacts from an ancient time but thought the admission price was a bit steep. It's not that big, two floors, but I was impressed with all the artistry Minoans had in their time.
Afterwards we walked around town and we also picked up our ferry tickets for tomorrow since I didn't want to worry about it when we got to the ferry. Did some shopping and then ate a super cheap meal at Gusto All Day. Got a vegetarian pizza and chicken sandwich with fries all for 14 euros and more than enough to share with three adults!
Walked around and went back to the hotel by 8 pm to get good sleep and be up early tomorrow. Can't wait for Santorini!!
