Today we skipped the scorching beaches and went to explore the nearby city of Rethymos. It's an hour away by car and very similar to Chania but different. The harbor seems smaller but the town seems more vast (though not by much). Rethymos has a fortress at the top which differentiates it from Chania. Costs 4 euros to enter or for a family of three, 10 euros total. It was nice to see but I think I'm done with seeing castles/fortresses/rocks from centuries ago for a good while. I saw some earlier this year in Cartagena, Colombia and then in Denmark and in Nova Scotia and in Rhodes.
There is a mosque at the top. The fortress was built by Venetians and then took over by Turkish forces at some point. You can go in but I was already sweating and didn't want to make the walk over!
Spent the rest of the afternoon wandering around the pretty narrow streets.
Around 3 pm we went back to Chania. I went for a quick dip at the pool, then we had dinner nearby (was good but don't feel like recapping it. Will say that Cretan cheese called graviera is delish!) and walked around Chania again as well.
I had planned for us to go to Balos Beach or some other beach but didn't have time for it. Kind of wish we did though but I was curious to check out Rethymos too. So much to see, so little time!
